Braeburn

This cultivar, originally from New Zealand, bears fruit rapidly and abundantly. The fruit is large, oblong, asymmetric and light green with reddish-brown (bright red in some environments) streaks or veins on at least 40% of the surface; the flesh is compact, not always firm (tending to be floury in the plain), juicy, not too sweet and not too sharp and not very aromatic. The fruit is subject to "bitter pit" and therefore frequent calcium treatments are advisable. The tree is not very vigorous. Harvested from the end of September to the end of October (three pickings may be necessary in the plain, and two pickings in pre-Alpine and low Alpine zones).

Other factors to be considered very carefully include the healthiness of the propagation material, the certainty of the varietal identity, the control of the supply sources and the commercial potential of the reproduced clone.
